Spectur is proud to be working alongside Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW) on a groundbreaking trial that uses AI-powered camera technology to improve safety for rock fishers along the New South Wales coastline.
Rock fishing is one of Australia’s most popular; and most dangerous coastal pastimes. Tragically, it continues to claim lives each year. This trial aims to change that, combining advanced visual AI with Spectur’s purpose-built surveillance systems to detect rock fishing incidents in real time and alert responders faster than ever before.
In an innovative approach to testing, SLSNSW volunteers have been simulating real-life emergencies by entering the water, helping to train and refine the system’s ability to recognise potential incidents. This data-driven process allows the AI to “learn” what a rock fishing emergency looks like, improving accuracy and responsiveness in genuine situations.
By capturing and analysing these simulated events, Spectur’s technology is becoming smarter, faster, and more capable of identifying when someone may be in danger; helping authorities act before it’s too late.
This project exemplifies the very best of technology in service of community. By partnering with Surf Life Saving NSW, Spectur is proud to contribute to an initiative that blends innovation, collaboration, and compassion; keeping people safe while they enjoy Australia’s spectacular coastline.
As testing continues, Spectur remains committed to working with SLSNSW and other partners to expand the capabilities of AI-driven coastal safety. Together, we’re building smarter systems that not only watch, but understand and act when lives are at risk.
